Reducing the carbon footprint related to EV charging
Given the increase in the sales of electric vehicles (EVs), due to growth driven by climate change politics and the cost of fuel, there is now a huge demand for the expansion of EV charging infrastructure across the UK. The government plans to halt the sale of all petrol and diesel cars by 2030, with only electric vehicles being available to buy – this means that by 2040, most people will drive an electric car. Of course, this requires the rollout of more supporting infrastructure, such as more charging points scattered across the country so that you can be sure your car can get power when you need it.
The replacement of petrol and diesel cars is fuelled by the need to reduce the carbon emissions from transportation. Bearing this in mind, we believe that installation of EV charging infrastructure should also keep to a minimum carbon footprint. Reducing the amount of concrete used will drastically lower carbon emissions – the production of concrete is a very energy intensive process, where the components are heated in a kiln to achieve calcinization, which releases CO2.
What we do at EV Blocks is reduce the amount of concrete being used to form the foundations of freestanding EV charging points. This can be achieved by using pre-cast EV foundation bases instead of free pour concrete to construct the EV foundations.
Why Pre-Cast EV Foundations Use Less Carbon
Whilst pre-cast EV foundations still require the use of concrete, they use less than wet pour methods. There are three main reasons that pre-cast foundations can reduce the EV charging infrastructure carbon footprint:
Pre-cast foundations are hollow, so the volume of concrete per installation is lower than using a wet pour and casting on site methodology.
One of the main benefits of a pre-cast foundation is that the finish is consistent. This means it won’t be necessary to duplicate and repour a concrete plinth if a wet pour method is used and then later fails due to poor weather conditions or an inconsistent cement mix.
Using pre-cast foundations in this case saves carbon from the concrete potentially having to be repoured, as well as reducing the road miles required for additional site visits.
Adaptable To The Future
The aluminium plate on top of our pre-cast solutions is compatible with different types of EV chargers, which means that if you need to change or upgrade the EV charger where you have installed our EV Block foundations you will not need to dig up and replace the plinth.
